Mental illness can be challenging and difficult to manage. Conversely, mental wellness can also be difficult to maintain at all times. Mental wellness is a state of psychological and emotional well being; when not maintained, it can lead to mental illness such as anxiety and depression. Several factors can lead to anxiety and depression, such as adverse childhood experiences, current family situation, and relationship with others, to name a few.
Anxiety & Depression
Anxiety can present itself in an individual at any age and at any time. Similarly, depression often accompanies anxiety. Experiencing both can be challenging and it is not about being ‘crazy’. Applying a label of ‘crazy’ only continues to perpetuate stigma. The experience of anxiety can be similar to experiencing fear without the presence of real danger, such as a fast moving vehicle coming at you.
Depression can also present itself at any stage of a person’s life. Depression is often a word used in everyday language to describe a number of feelings. Feelings such as sadness, frustration, disappointment, as well as lethargy. In clinical practice, there are several kinds of depression that could range from mild depression to major depression. It is also considered as a mood disorder that has persisted for weeks or months.
The Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH) identifies trauma as the challenging emotional consequences an individual experiences when living through distressing and life threatening experiences.
Trauma can overwhelm an individual’s coping abilities and sense of safety. Traumatic events can be experienced from childhood to adulthood. When thoughts and memories of the event do not go away, it can lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, not all trauma leads to PTSD.
Relationships can be challenging in the best of times. Couples can experience miscommunication and gridlock over difficult issues, as well as difficulty maintaining intimacy during life cycles. In addition, if there has been infidelity, re-establishing trust and repairing the relationship can be daunting. Furthermore, past life trauma can also impact current relationship.
